Miami area has probably most Cuban immigrants from the whole United States. When Fidel Castro took over Cuba in 1959 he was the men a lot of people liked. But after he started aligning with Soviet Union model of Communism, it was a time for many Cubans to leave the home land and fly to South Florida, particularly into Miami. With estimated 650 000 Cuban refugees, United States needed an assistance centre and it was decided to use building from 1925, 17 stories high Freedom Tower.
Building itself was build based on the design of the Giralda of Seville. It was originally used as a newspaper headquarters and printing facility until 1957, when there was no use for this building anymore. Unused for almost 5 years, United States government decided to lease it to the General Service Administration, who started using to as a Cuban Assistance Centre for Cuban Refugees. This centre had resources to help adjusting all Cubans to their new lives in the united States. That is why Freedom Tower is considered the “Ellis Island of the South”.
Nowadays, there is a admission free exhibition describing struggles of those who decided to change their lives and resettle in the land of freedom, United States.
