One of the Miami’s original neighborhoods also know as Colored Town. When the city of Miami started to grow, African-Americans were allowed to purchase land only in designated areas.
Celebrities like Nat Cole King or Ella Fitzgerald were not allowed in the city of Miami, but Overtown suited their needs just right.
The Lyric Theater is the lone surviving building in the district known as “Little Broadway.” The Lyric opened in 1913 and quickly became the major center of entertainment for blacks in Miami. Built in 1914, it is still great focal point up to now.
